As the rumour of Stockport's interest in Carl Baker was revealed to be accurate in early July, it became apparent to most Shrimps that holding on to him was going to be extremely difficult.
Even in spite of our rejection of Stockport's first three bids, and the club's subsequent adamancy that he would remain a Morecambe player - at least until a decent replacement could be found – there was an inevitability that he wouldn't be here for much longer.

It's not hard to see why either. For Stockport weren't the only club to have expressed interest in him in 2008. Indeed, rumours of Wolves (whose crushing he unforgettably contributed to) and other Championship clubs seeking his signature that did the rounds back in January indicated that, from then on, his stay here was only ever going to be temporary.

I wrote of Garry Thompson upon his departure that "some birds weren't meant to be caged" and the same sentiment, I think, applies to Baker. He had shown in a very short period of time how much quality he possess and Stockport themselves were well aware of his wizardry. It was perhaps the strength of his virtuoso performance against them which persuaded them to persevere in their attempts to land him.

He was a real rarity at this level: at ease with either foot, having the ability to cut inside, or drift out wide and, for a debut season in League football, was excellent in front of goal. But like everything else in this world, he didn't come without flaws, and when things weren't going his or our way, he could often linger on the ball too long, which he did frequently in the latter stages of the season.

But that won't be dwelled upon too much. The memory of perfect performances against Bradford, Stockport, Peterborough and Wolves will ensure he always has a place in Morecambe fans' hearts. But he is consigned to the past now and we must look to move forward, holding the healthy fee he has left in his wake.
