A WORLD-CLASS blues guitarist from Australia will headline a week-long blues festival in Morecambe this summer as this year's programme of live events in the town goes from strength to strength.
Geoff Achison and his band The Souldiggers will perform at The Carleton on Saturday, June 30 for the climax of BluesWater 2007, which promoter Steve Middlesbrough hopes will eventually rival similar international blues festivals in Maryport and Colne.
Achison will visit Morecambe hot-foot from sell-out dates in the south of England and a tour of his native land and the USA, where he is regarded as the blues equivalent of Jimi Hendrix – such is his talent with the guitar.
Quality
"This guy is so good we have designed the whole festival around him," said Steve.
"Rarely has a guitarist of his quality appeared in Morecambe."
Also performing on June 30 will be leading French acoustic blues performer Claude Bourbon, and a host of top bands from our region including Swamp Dogs, Tantrum, The Section and Tin Pan Alley.
This grand finale at The Carleton will be preceded by six days of music at a different fringe venue each night, to include Ma Murphy's, The Bath Hotel and The York Hotel, where the launch night will take place on Sunday, June 24.
BluesWater – subtitled 'Seven Blue Days In Sunny June' – has been added to a programme of summer festivals co-organised by Steve Middlesbrough's Kalimba events group.
Previously announced were Morecambe Jazz 2007 (July 7 and 8) and Country Kickback (May 26 and 27) in Happy Mount Park, and the FAB 60s Festival (May 4 to 7), Parklife showcase for young bands (June 17), Lancaster Soul (August 20 to 26) and Solar dance (September 9) in Williamson Park, Lancaster.
Anyone wishing to sponsor or help with these events should call Kalimba on 424303; or for Happy Mount Park events please call 424303 or 401140.
