A SOLDIER on leave was driving whilst drunk and failed to stop after clipping another motorist's wing mirror.
Andrew Michael Edmond-son, 18, of Douglas Avenue, Heysham, pleaded guilty to driving whilst over the drink-drive limit, and failing to stop after an accident, when he appeared at Lancaster Magist-rates' Court.

The court heard that at about 10pm on
August 15, witness Andrew Helme was on Torrisholme Road in his car.

The defendant was coming from the opposite direction on the wrong side of the road and driving erratically. Edmondson swerved at the last moment and struck Mr Helme's mirror but did not stop.

Mr Helme followed him for some distance but stopped when Edmondson's driving became even more erratic.

Defending, Jonathan Jack-son told the court that the defendant was home on leave and had been at a party where he drank beer and vodka.

"He drove home but said he was driving in the middle of the road. He thought he had hit the mirror of a stationary car as there was no damage to his vehicle."

Magistrates disqualified Ed-mondson from driving for 18 months and fined him £260 for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was fined £130 for failing to stop, and ordered to pay court costs of £60 and a £15 victim surcharge.
