A police driving trainer whose colleague crashed into a pensioner's car, killing him, has told a court that he feels responsible.
Retired lecturer Peter Williams, 67, was driving his VW Touran with wife Jean on a country lane when a marked police Volvo T5 smashed into them at around 90mph.
Mrs Williams survived but her husband, from Bolton-le-Sands, died 24 hours later, on N
ovember 2, 2006.
The car that collided with them was driven by PC Sean Schofield, 38, an advanced driver with Lancashire Police.
He was following trainer PC Andrew Massingham, 41, along the winding B6254 near Over Kellett, and reached speeds of 104mph moments before the smash.
PC Massingham, who is jointly charged with causing death by dangerous driving with PC Schofield, said he felt responsible.
Asked by his barrister Jonathan Fuller QC at Liverpool Crown Court if he had a message for the victim's family, he said: "I just wish I hadn't chosen that road on that day. I feel responsible for it."
