A DISGRUNTLED passenger was shocked to be told that he had to throw away his hot sandwich before getting on a bus at Lancaster Bus Station.
Gary Tolley, 48, bought a sausage and egg sandwich from the cafe at the bus station last Thursday, but was told by the driver that no hot food was allowed on the bus.
The driver said that hot food smelled and he could not take it on, even though he had wrapped it up and wasn't going to eat it on the bus.
"If they're going to have a policy they need to put it in writing," a bemused Gary told The Visitor. "I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known."
Self-employed Gary, from Bradford, later rang Stagecoach and was told that it was company policy not to have hot food on buses.
Gary, who was in the area visiting his parents who live on Westcliffe Drive in Morecambe, said to the company that buses take people to Asda, where people get on with hot food.
"There needs to be a sign in Asda telling people not to get on with hot food if that's the case," he said.
Colin Nicholson, marketing manager of Stagecoach North West said: "We have a code of conduct displayed clearly in our buses, which is there for the benefit of all our passengers.
"While we cannot cover every scenario, we allow our drivers to use reasonable, individual discretion in applying the code.
"We discourage the consumption of food on our vehicles, which contributes to litter and the annoyance of other passengers."
