Brighton bomb man at Dukes

THE man who tried to kill Margaret Thatcher when she was Prime Minister is coming to Lancaster.
Patrick Magee, who bombed the Grand Hotel in Brighton in an attempt to wipe out the British Government when he was a member of the IRA, will appear at the Dukes Theatre on Tuesday, October 14.
Magee will speak to the Dukes audience alongside Jo Berry, daughter of Conservative MP Sir Anthony Berry – one of five people killed in the terrorist attack during the Conservative Party conference of 1984.
Entitled 'Making Peace: Jo Berry and Patrick Magee', this event is being held to coincide with the Dukes' first in-house production of their autumn season, entitled 'The Bomb'.
Running from October 9 to October 25, 'The Bomb' explores the extraordinary relationship between the Brighton bomber and his victim's daughter.
Jo Berry, a pacifist, tried for years to meet her father's murderer in an attempt to understand his motivation and to "look for peace in a place beyond hatred and retribution", eventually succeeding in 2000 after Magee was released from prison under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
'The Bomb', written by Kevin Dyer and directed by the Dukes' director Joe Sumsion, won Joe the Writers' Guild New Writing Encouragement Award in 2006.
"The amazing thing about Jo Berry and Pat Magee is they have found a way to relate to each other and share platforms for the promotion of peace," said Joe.
"A lot of people may think it's wrong, but that's what 'The Bomb' is about – it challenges people's preconceptions."
On October 14, Jo Berry and Patrick Magee will talk about their experiences and their journey together. Admission is free for 'The Bomb' ticketholders.
