A HOMELESS ex-heroin addict who is travelling around Britain's beaches making stone sculptures has arrived in Morecambe.
Known only by his artist name 'Dr Geebers', the 34-year-old, who has already walked 1,700 miles, has constructed two or three pieces of 'pebble art' near The Midland Hotel.
By the end of this week, he will have moved on towards the Lake District and Scotland.
Dr Geebers said: "It has taken me since May 2009 to reach Morecambe.
"I decided to take on the challenge which started over a drunken debt – my mate said I couldn't do it.
"I have visited 21 beaches around the British Isles.
"At the end of my journey I want to write a book about my experience to raise money for homeless charities."
Dr Geebers, who was a heroin addict for two-and-a-half years, has been homeless for 13 years.
Before he started on his quest, Dr Geebers was drinking 10 bottles of cider a day – now he only drinks half a bottle of brandy at night to keep warm.
He said: "So far, I've moved 90 tons of pebbles and walked 1,700 miles.
"By the time I have finished, I may have walked 6,000 miles.
"When I started off in Brighton, I couldn't believe the response I was getting, so I thought 'why not pebble sculptures'?
"In Morecambe, the Tern project has influenced me.
"I am just a homeless person with a purpose, to write a book about how someone can get their life together."
Dr Geebers plans to be in Scotland by this May and to be back in Brighton by May 2011.
He added: "We've all made mistakes but I have the chance to turn it around to help society. "
