For the first time in more than 40 years the Winter Gardens has played host to the grunts and grapples of the wrestling ring.

Morecambe-based PAID Promotions Wrestling put on a lively show on Sunday in the atmospheric surroundings of the Grade II* listed Morecambe theatre .

Fans raised the roof when their favourite Ricky J McKenzie bested bad guy CJ Banks to win a tournament and lift the Golden Chance Trophy.

Wrestling was regular entertainment during the theatre’s heyday of the 1950s and 1960s. The Winter Gardens closed in 1977 but is being restored and opens occasionally for special events. More wrestling is due at the theatre on Sunday, September 28 when British Champion Craig Kollins will fight former champ Joey Hayes.
