Lloyd Webber backs historic Gardens show
The cast of Jesus Christ Superstar on stage at the Winter Gardens.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has given his blessing to the first stage musical at the Winter Gardens in over 35 years.
Lord Lloyd Webber wrote to organisers of Jesus Christ Superstar, the first stage production of its kind at Morecambe’s old theatre since it closed down in 1977.Mike Moorhouse, from Christ Church Broadway Productions, said the company was delighted to receive the thumbs up from the showbiz legend.
“He’s emailed and written to us to say we’re all right to put on the show,” said Mr Moorhouse.
“The first musical at the Winter Gardens since 1977 is going to be a huge thing and we’ve had a lot of TV and radio interest.”
Lloyd Webber, who wrote Jesus Christ Superstar with Tim Rice, first brought the classic musical to the stage in 1970.
The Winter Gardens, while still officially closed, currently opens a few times a year for live entertainment.
In recent years the theatre has hosted the two-day Morecambe Variety event, live episodes of the TV show ‘Most Haunted’ and music festivals.
Owners the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust hope these events will keep the theatre in the public eye and help raise funds for its full restoration.
Jesus Christ Superstar will be performed every night from Wednesday, March 20 to Saturday, March 23 at 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced £10 for adults, £8 concessions, available by calling Jill Milligan on 414676 or email christchurchdrama@gmail.com
Tickets are selling fast, especially for Friday and Saturday nights where only limited seats remain.
For a full preview of the musical see next week’s Visitor.
