A singer who was there at the dawn of the reality TV talent show craze visited our resort to perform at the recent Top 20 festivals season curtain-raiser Morecambe Live. ROBYN DURDY talks to ex-Liberty X star KEVIN SIMM.

YOU may remember Kev Simm as one fifth of the band Liberty X – a band formed out of the beaten finalists from the smash hit Popstars TV show in 2000.

This programme also launched the careers of Myleene Klass, Kym Marsh and Darius (Danesh) Campbell and as the first ever reality TV show of its kind, was a forerunner for Pop Idol, The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

Liberty X released three albums and earned a number one single and Brit award for Just A Little Bit.

But the pop group’s fame was short-lived and the five ended up going their separate ways in 2007.

“(Afterwards) I had a few years off not doing much but enjoying my mid-20s and having a laugh,” says Kev, who is from Leyland.

“I did have an album in Japan about a year after the band split and filmed my video in Jamaica.”

He blames his record company for failing to get behind the disc and says: “That side of my life is gone now.”

He has tasted chart success since, however, having written a number one hit in Korea for a boy band called Super Junior.”

Now aged 31, Kev is now following his dream of being a professional photographer.
