Joan aims for the top of the pops

Move over Lady Ga Ga and Rihanna, because a Morecambe woman has launched her own bid for UK chart glory.

Joan Ashworth, a 66-year-old sheltered housing manager, is part of a pop group with a difference who will record a song aiming for the number one spot.

Joan is a member of the Anchor Community Band, made up of staff and elderly residents of care homes and retirement properties across the region.

She has been rehearsing the song with fellow workers and residents at the Monkswood Avenue sheltered housing estate, where she is manager.

Money raised from sales of the tune will be donated to charity Contact the Elderly, which organises monthly tea parties for elderly people who live alone.

“It’s a really good idea; music brings people together and cheers you up,” said Joan.

The name of the song is a closely-guarded secret, but Joan said: “It’s a really powerful song because the words are telling younger people we are exactly the same as them but just a bit older.

“I first started singing in a choir in 2003, before that I sang whilst I was at school.

“Music has helped me in the past when I was in a difficult relationship, I was able to put on my headphones and just forget about it.

“The older people have worked so hard during rehearsals that I hope people of Morecambe will support them by downloading or buying the record when it is released later this year.”
