As the Visitor and sister paper the Lancaster Guardian has followed the recovery of the devastating floods that hit the district last year, we decided to look back in our archives at another familiar event.

The rough sea on Morecambe promenade has been pictured in many resort postcards and at times has also caused devastating results, as these pictures show.

Few storms have been as big, or as disastrous as that of November 1977, which destroyed the West End Pier, or that of 1983 which flooded large areas of the resort, and caused widespread damage to homes, hotels and business premises.

As a result of the first it was decided to build a wave reflection wall along the promenade, but this was not yet finished when the seas poured in again.

A £14 million sea defence scheme was later implemented and presently work continues on the new sea wall defence scheme along the promenade.
