AS a Sand Grown 'Un, at present exiled in the Midlands, I want to say – what is wrong with the people of Morecambe and Heysham?
I read on a weekly basis in The Visitor the ups and downs of the promenade near to the Midland Hotel.

Whilst I have to say the Midland Hotel has been returned to its former glory by Urban Splash, I fail to see why they now want to build what can o
nly be called a huge monstrosity next door!

Yes, the area looks a mess and has done since the closure and demolition of the Super Swimming Stadium. Surely no-one wants the area replaced by such a dysfunctional structure.

My ideas for the regeneration of this area are:
1. Landscape the area providing seating areas, grassed areas, palm trees for shade;
2. A sunken area for concerts etc;
3. A go-cart or splash park – similar to the one in Happy Mount Park;
4. How about a new pier? Other seaside towns are doing the same;
5. Get all the shops/hotels/pubs to remove all the tatty hoarding and signs along Marine Road and return them to their original glory.

Morecambe needs to be brought into the present century and cater for the visitors who come now, not those who used to come on Wakes Week.

Whilst Morecambe and Heysham residents are mostly retired, there are still young people who are growing up in the area.The new splash park, Next, JJB and Homebase and regeneration of the Midland are a fantastic start but keep on the right track. Remember Blobby.

I was fortunate to have stayed at the OLD Midland Hotel in its last trading months. What a wonderful place it was too. Yes the rooms certainly needed updating and how but the ground floor was magnificent in all its art deco splendour.

I visited it again in May this year and all I can say is that whilst Urban Splash may well have been the only company to take on the "restoration" of this building, I would call it more "desecration".

I note there are concerns about future development of the foreshore and see this company's name mentioned as being the developer or proposed developer.

If I were the people of Morecambe, I wouldn't even let that company loose on your public conveniences!!
