EARLIER this year I attended a conference with the Co-op Party in Blackpool when one of the main topics raised was the use of plastic bags.
The Co-op has introduced a type of bag called a 'home compostable, which I understand will compost within 26 weeks in the right conditions.
The Co-op has already introduced these bags in many of its stores and hopes to do so in many more in the f
uture.
After attending this very interesting conference I decided to put a motion before our city council asking it to try to encourage our local stores to be 'plastic bag free' where possible.
I have noticed, after conducting a personal survey of some weeks, that many of our local stores are already asking: "Do you want a bag?"
Maybe all stores should eventually adopt the Co-op way and offer Fair Trade cotton bags, and bags for life.
I am aware many stores do have this offer on board now and take up this sensible idea now to produce home compostable bags, which can be used later for old or unused food, which then makes for a cleaner bin, hopefully keeping away any vermin.
Of course, there will be an extra cost for this change, but now more and more people are trying to preserve our planet, are we not?
For now, happy and sensible shopping!
