IT is an encouraging sign to read of our city planners standing up to a firm of developers – albeit only Mitchells the brewers and their desire to flatten the Elms Hotel.
Whether the planners will persevere in their efforts remains a matter of some conjecture. Perhaps this new-found aggressive approach might be applied further along the promenade to the plans of Urban Splash with regard to the land adjacent to the Midland Hotel.

They have now managed to complete the renovation of the hotel, and that's what they were supposed to do, but it surely doesn't entitle them to be given carte blanch for the rest of the promenade.

No doubt local feelings about this will have been highlighted by Coun Archer's canvassing of shoppers in the Arndale Centre on July 7. I wish her well. Perhaps it can be continued for a full week?
