UNDOUBTEDLY the credit crunch has caused individual citizens and large corporations to tighten their belts. However, the latest county council penny-pinching project puts the lives of young children at risk.
Jobsworths from the county council have determined that West End Primary School no longer qualifies for a lollipop lady at the dangerous junction of Westminster and Devonshire Roads, despite the fact that this is a primary bus route.

In these days of 'corporate manslaughter', is the county council cabinet member Coun Janice Hanson, who is ultimately responsible for this outrageous decision, going to be prosecuted if a child is killed on a cold, dark winter morning, just to save a few pence?

Ironically, West End Primary School was designated as a 20mph zone 15 years ago, so the dangers of children crossing Westminster Road have been long acknowledged. Indeed, I recall a fruitless consultation on traffic calming on Westminster Road in St Barnabas Community Centre six or seven years ago.

Janice Hanson is quick to criticise the decisions of the city council, how about calling off her county Rottweilers to ensure the safety of children in the West End this winter?
