One of the key features of our town centre is the open aspect of the area in question, together with the wonderful view across to the Lake District hills and the Furness peninsula.
Any attempt to build on that land must be resisted at all costs; t
he unique view must be preserved for future generations to enjoy.
A second hotel on that site – never! Enough hotels in the town are closing down as it is. More housing there – never!
A council report said: "There is insufficient evidence that the
development in the form proposed would meet local housing needs and offer the community any benefit."
I would suggest that the area around the central promenade site does not need any more housing, and any building at all would not benefit the community, particularly if they are seven storeys high.
I would also comment that Urban Splash do not care in any way for the future of Morecambe, as such – they are here purely for the money they can make.
If they did not foresee making a profit from the Midland they surely would not be here.
They can now see a further way of making money for shareholders, and if this involves destroying the open aspect of the promenade area for future generations then so be it, they will not care.
Being cynical, I wonder how long will it be before they apply to
convert the Midland into more apartments.
Be bold, build a marina there with one-storey ancillary buildings; something for holidaymakers to walk around and enjoy whilst
looking out across one of the most beautiful views that any seaside town could hope for.
