More fatalities on bypass look likely

WITH reference to your recent front page about the Heysham bypass crash, I would first like to send my condolences to the families of the victims of this tragic accident.
This incident, unfortunately, was an accident waiting to happen. I have been a regular user of this road since it opened in 1994 and have seen some horrendous driving.

The accident should trigger some thought on how this road is
managed in order
to avoid a repeat of such an incident in the future.

I believe the following two actions should be instigated:
n Increase the road space by 20 per cent by removing the cycle lane.

Surely there are enough safer and more pleasant cycling routes from Heysham to Lancaster;
* Increase the speed limit to a more realistic 60mph but back this up with strict enforcement. Speed cameras should be installed backed up by more regular police patrols.

Unfortunately, the police road emphasis in this area appears to be catching motorists doing 34mph on Heysham Road rather than 100mph on the bypass. Could this be more profitable I ask myself?

One thing I did observe in the few weeks following the accident was that drivers did slow down. This could happen again as a result of your coverage.

But memories are short and unless some action is taken things will just drift back to how they were with another accident in waiting.

What was the cause of the accident? Stupidity, drink or drugs, mechanical failure? People don't want to have to pay through the nose to use the roads, but expect people to fund roadside 'furniture' to help lessen the chance of an accident. You have said you have seen 'horrendous driving' yet you want people to be able to drive faster!

The road isn't dangerous, it just sits there, it's certain people who can't ease off the accelerator, use phones or drive under the influence of drink or drugs etc that make it dangerous by proxy. You are blaming an inanimate object. Tens of thousands of vehicles use it without incident, only a miniscule percentage don't make it from one end to the other without bumper banging.

As for doing over 30 on Heysham Road, which sees more pedestrians cross it than the by-pass, if someone you knew was killed by someone doing in excess of the limit, would you say to them 'oh, thats alright then, I'll let you off, even if you were only 6 mph below the speed that is guaranteed to kill virtually everyone if hit at it'.

I get tired of drivers who think roads are strictly for cars, and expect to be pampered and excused for their lack of concern.
