LANCASTER'S final game of the season ended in a draw after an enjoyable game at Giant Axe.

It was also a generous affair after City gifted the visitors their opener before an own goal gave them their deserved equaliser with 10 minutes to go.

City knew they could not reach the play-offs but there was no complacency in this performance, especially in the first half.

However, Wakefield goalkeeper Andy Woods was proving hard to beat as he denied Lee Dodgson, Alan Coar and Dominic Ward in quick succession in a quick-fire opening 20 minutes.

Unfortunately it was a goalkeeping error at the other end that opened the scoring, a real disappointment for Mark Thornley in the City net.
He sliced a Neil Uberschar back-pass across his goal, it looked to be heading in without the assistance of Tom Denton but he made sure.

The chances came thick and fast for the home side in an eventful first half, yet they could not take them; an accusation that will ring true in relation to their failed promotion chase.

Ward came close with a header after a succession of corners which all looked likely to produce a goal but City could not capitalise.

Taking his place in the starting eleven and in a central midfield berth Rob Wilson had a good first half and a hard-working second, while Mike Rushton completed 70 minutes on his comeback trail from a knee injury.
The second half was a shadow of its predecessor. City pushed on until finally Nicholson's attempted clearance flew into the top corner with 10 minutes left.

As City went for the winner, spaces were left at the back and sub keeper Neil Beesely had to be alert to keep the score 1-1.

Lancaster City: Thornley (Beesley 45), Uberschar, Heffernan, Teague, Stringfellow, Wilson, Rushton (Entwisle 72), Ward, Coar (Osborne 72), Dodgson, Helliwell. Subs not used: Atkinson, Haddow.

Referee: James Madine.

Attendance: 221.
