Our TV hopefuls get the ex-factor
AN audience of 10 million viewers saw two zany Morecambe entertainers face the wrath of Simon Cowell on prime time television last Saturday night.
But although DJs Trevor Cooke and Allan Strong were voted off the hit show 'Britain's Got Talent' in double-quick time, they both said how much they enjoyed the experience.
Mates Trevor and Allan travelled to Blackpool Opera House last January, along with hundreds of other hopefuls, to show their skills in front of Cowell and fellow judges Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden.
ITV1 viewers on Saturday saw Allan, 40, try out a few comedy impressions on the unforgiving trio, including 'Blakey' from On The Buses, Zak Dingle from Emmerdale and Frank Spencer.
But the audience was unimpressed, shouting "OFF! OFF! OFF!" All three judges then quickly hit their buzzers to end Allan's routine.
Cowell told Allan: "You were bloody awful and the audience hated you."
On the ITV2 follow-up programme 'Britain's Got More Talent', Allan took rejection in good humour when interviewed by presenter Stephen Mulhearn – even allowing Mulhearn to try out his beret for his own Frank Spencer imitation.
Meanwhile ITV1 viewers got only the briefest glimpse of Trevor, who went on stage to sing Barry White's 'You're The First, The Last, My Everything' dressed as Timmy Mallett and carrying a stuffed monkey.
But as soon as the music started and Trevor sang: "You're the first...", Cowell hit his buzzer to vote him off.
Trevor, 48, was also featured on the ITV2 spin-off show, singing a duet of 'Amarillo' with Stephen Mulhearn.
Trevor, who works mainly in Blackpool these days as a DJ and compere, said:
"We weren't what they were looking for. We weren't cool enough.
"But to be on the Opera House stage in front of a full house was amazing. And it was good TV.
"At least we didn't end up like another contestant – the escapologist who couldn't get out of his sack. They had to call St John Ambulance onto stage to help him out!"
Allan, who also works as a children's entertainer under the guise of 'Ally the Clown', says he will now return to his day job as a store
assistant at Morrison's in Morecambe.
"Appearing on Britain's Got Talent was the best day of my life," he said. "What with meeting Ant and Dec it was all going so well ... until I got on stage.
"When the crowd shouted: 'OFF! OFF! OFF!' I thought they wanted me to strip."
* TREVOR Cooke will get the chance to have his own say on local talent when he appears as a judge in Lancaster and Morecambe Newspapers' Talent On Show contest at the Hexagon, Lancaster and Morecambe College, on Saturday, June 7.
