LONG GONE is the traditional pub decor, the big screens, the pool tables and the fruit machines. Lancaster's Stonewell Tavern is almost unrecognisable from the former Irish bar Paddy Mulligan's on Lower Church Street, successfully re-branding itself as a live music venue with a difference.
Italian owner Jerry Caterina and his wife Rohina, who took over the pub over a year ago, say the changes have been a vast improvement.

As well as serving fresh pasta daily from noon to 3pm, the pub provides live entertainment throughout the week, with a popular Jam Session on Sunday afternoon.

The venue has undergone a huge makeover.

A large piano sits before a small stage, there's fairy lights, comfortable cushions and plenty of plants dotted around the pub to give it that unique, homely feel.

Music is the main priority in The Stonewell and Jerry and Rohina have clearly worked hard to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, as well as delivering a varied programme to music lovers in Lancaster.

Bands who've performed at the venue include Morecambe's Idol Minds, Lancaster's Lava and popular act Sold to the Sky, a huge favourite of Rohina's.

"The music is a great positive" says Rohina. "We now have live bands on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

"The Stonewell is very original – there's a big family/friends feel and there's always the same friendly staff.

"Nearly all of our customers come and then come again and again and become friends."

Rohina and Jerry have done their best to make The Stonewell into the kind of pub they'd like to visit.

"The pub has been brought it back to life," says Rohina.

"I love watching people enjoy themselves in the Stonewell – the bar which Jerry and I have created, that's a nice feeling.

"Jerry now has a business that he is proud of, he now gets recognised when we are out, as 'Jerry from the Stonewell Tavern'.

"He loves being an entertainer, playing music and talking and now he can do all these things in his own bar.

"Music will continue to grow at The Stonewell. A big thanks to all the bands and musicians who have supported us so far – long may this continue."
