Ten out of ten for Marathon Man

Running one marathon is hard enough, but how about 10 in 10 days?

One Morecambe runner believes he is equal to a gruelling event the world adventurer Bear Grylls has called “an epic challenge requiring epic strength of mind”.

John McCann, 61, is about to take on the world’s toughest endurance run; the Brathay 10in10 around England’s largest lake, Lake Windermere.

If he succeeds, John will become one of only 59 runners to have ever overcome this mammoth task.

The former physiotherapist has been training since June and will be the eldest of 16 competitors, aged between 30 and 61 years, from all over the UK.

The event is organised by Brathay Trust, an Ambleside-based national charity that works to improve the life chances of chil

dren and young people by inspiring them to engage positively in their communities.

“This will be the biggest and most frightening challenge I’ve ever undertaken,” said John. “I will be completely outside my comfort zone and my training reflects this. I’ve really been putting the miles in.

“I’ve completed the Brathay Windermere Marathon on three occasions and I was always aware of this event.

“Although I have to admit I was intrigued by it, I used the excuse that I didn’t have the time to fully prepare for it to avoid taking part.

“However, I retired last year so that excuse is out of the window. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of running distances, and I completed my first marathon in 1984, so I’ve always been pretty fit.”

The Brathay 10in10 is governed by UK Athletics and is the only regulated event of its kind in the world.

The first of the 10 marathons starts on Friday, May 10 with the final 26.2 mile lap of Windermere taking place on Sunday, May 19, alongside the Brathay Windermere Marathon.

Even Bear Grylls, recognised around the world as the face of survival and outdoor adventure, appreciates the difficulties of the 10in10.

He said: “It’s an epic challenge that will require an epic strength of mind.”
