DOG owners who allow their pooches to poop on the pavement will be targeted for the next three months, thanks to a town council and police project.

Police community support officers (PCSOs) will be checking members of public who are walking dogs to see if they have a waste bag. If not, they will be given one funded by Morecambe Town Council.

The PCSOs will also be looking out for “dog foulers” in targeted areas of the town.

This is the second of a series of themed policing priorities agreed between the parish council and the police.

The first priority, which ran for three months starting in March, focused on anti-social behaviour on buses, and the town council said this has been judged a success.

Currently the town council contributes £67,608 of taxpayers’ money towards the wages of six PCSOs within the town.

Members of the public are also asked to report any person seen to not pick up after their dog to the Lancaster City Council Dog Warden by calling 01524 582757.
