Meat-free day helps rainforest

I WAS very disappointed to read in The Visitor (November 25) that Coun Joyce Taylor's proposal to introduce 'meat-free Mondays' has failed.

It is an excellent idea because, apart from the obvious health benefits, there are huge environmental benefits. Forests in South America are being destroyed to make way for soy production to feed animals which are eventually eaten by humans. This causes climate changing emissions and displaces indigenous people.

Cattle are also responsible for emitting methane which is 20 times more potent than CO2.

I trust that Coun Taylor will reintroduce this proposal at some future date by which time, hopefully, those councillors who opposed the suggestion will be better informed.
