Watchdog blast for coach firm

A FAMILY-RUN coach business which breached tachograph rules has had its licence curtailed following a public inquiry.

Battersby Silver Grey, based at White Lund in Morecambe, faced disciplinary action from the Traffic Commissioner for the North West for not observing the conditions of its public service licences.

Deputy traffic commissioner Simon Evans chose to curtail Battersby’s licence.

The public inquiry heard that Harrison’s Coaches (Morecambe) Ltd, trading as Battersby Silver Grey Coaches, had 27 vehicles.

Deputy traffic commissioner Simon Evans said: “When as many as 11 drivers over a period of five months failed to record their positioning journeys, that amounts to ‘wholesale failure’.

“It is to say the least disappointing to find that both transport managers and the staff member who is responsible for the training of others in drivers’ hours matters and their induction, are also implicated in the offences which have been found. However, this is the first public inquiry which has been faced by Harrisons Coaches (Morecambe) Ltd.

“There has been an investment in IT to seek to improve the position so that errors do not accumulate as quickly and go unchecked, perhaps as they did before.

“I have concluded that this is not a case where I need to find that repute has been lost by either the company or its transport managers.

“I dispose of the matter by directing a curtailment of the licence to 35 vehicles, the maximum number of vehicles to be covered, on an indefinite basis.”

Battersby Silver Grey, who specialise in UK and European coach tours, did not wish to comment.
