Pie franchise owner says business is on the up

Eight local ﬁrms have made the shortlist in a contest offering free advertising in The Visitor or Lancaster Guardian plus mentoring. They are among more than 1,100 ﬁrms who entered the newspaper industry’s acclaimed Local Business Accelerators (LBA) campaign.

Potts Pies was re-launched last year as a new limited company after the failure of a franchise in Germany which sent a previous incarnation of the firm into liquidation.

The firm still has shops in Lancaster, Morecambe and Bolton-le-Sands.

The Morecambe shop has been turned into a cafe and Potts now also offers deli-style food alongside its staple offerings of pie and mash.

Owner Russell Walsh said: “When you run business ideas by people you know you’re never sure if they are looking at you as though you’re barmy or whether they genuinely think it’s a good idea – that is why mentoring by business leaders would be really useful.

“Advertising will also help – even with some of the good prices offered by newspapers some firms see it as a luxury they cannot afford.”

Russell says the fortunes of Potts Pies are now looking up and he is hoping to open shops further afield which can be turned into franchise.
