County Councillor Tim Ashton, cabinet member for highways and transport: “The new road will reduce congestion and greatly increase the potential for investment in the surrounding area – it will be a huge boost for the whole Lancashire economy, not just the Heysham peninsula.”

David Gate, chair of Transport Solutions for Lancaster and Morecambe: “I think it’s a bad day for the Morecambe and Lancaster area. It’s the wrong decision. The benefits for the road (given by the council) are false. It won’t relieve congestion, it won’t bring prosperity and it won’t bring jobs. We will look at the decision and take legal advice.”

Gina Dowding, Lancaster Green party: “The Green Party wants a 21st century solution to Lancaster’s traffic problems and not a re-hash of poor quality 20th century thinking. We support a detailed package of measures costing £40m that will solve our traffic problems and benefit everyone with much improved transport options. The county council and the coalition government have rejected common sense and gone for the most expensive and least effective solution they could think of.”

David Morris, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale: “I am thoroughly delighted by today’s news. I saw the Secretary of State last night who congratulated me for securing the funding and I am now looking forward to work commencing on the road.”

And here’s what you said on Twitter.

Gary Rycroft: “Great news for our district - improved transport links and jobs #NoBrainer!”

Rob Mayor (@theglove78): “Hooray! Excellent news for the prosperity and hope for the entire region.”

Captain Sparkle (@CAPTAIN_SPARKLE): “About time! not looking forward to the traffic disruption as they build it though, but it will be worth it!”
