HEYSHAM power stations are planning to open a new visitors centre which give people the chance to see behind the scenes at the countrys most powerful nuclear reactors.

Heysham power stations are planning to open a new visitors’ centre which gives people the chance to see behind the scenes at the country’s most powerful nuclear reactors.

Planning permission for the new centre has gone to Lancaster City Council which will see the site of the former creche redeveloped.

This development is part of a national initiative by EDF Energy to improve public accessibility at all eight of its nuclear power stations across the UK.

“EDF Energy is committed to improving the transparency and openness surrounding our nuclear operations,” said Alan Oulton, Heysham 2’s station director. “The stations at Heysham attract massive public interest as we have four reactors at two sites here and we welcome the opportunity to be able to show people how we generate safe, low-carbon electricity for over three million homes.”

Richard Bradfield, acting station director at Heysham 1, said: “We have close and positive links with our community and last year when we opened our doors we were overwhelmed by the interest.

“I know the team here at Heysham is looking forward to welcoming people to the site as the centre will allow us to introduce people to our operation in a safe, informative and attractive environment.”

The Visitor Centre is scheduled to open in early 2013 and will employ a centre supervisor and guides.

It is expected it will attract between 7,500 and 10,000 visitors each year.

The majority of the tours will be organised for schools/educational groups. However, members of the public will be able to attend by appointment

Visitors will be given an introductory talk about how the station operates, before being given a guided tour through selected parts of the plant.
