Festival pulls in 25,000 to Morecambe

THIS year’s Seaside Festival was the busiest event in Morecambe for almost a decade.
Over 25,000 people flocked to Morecambe promenade for a two-day party culminating in brilliant sunshine on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Arrows were the biggest crowd-pleaser, pulling in huge numbers of onlookers at noon on Sunday.
Other attractions included a fly-past by a Spitfire plane, and a fireworks display and performance by Adele tribute act ‘Something Like Adele’ on Saturday evening.
Local musicians also entertained crowds on the Morecambe Arena stage across both days, including Dalton, The Reggie Mental Band, Twenty-Four Seven, Katy Pickles, The Hustle, Amy-Jo Clough and The Remix Pop Choir.
Pubs, shops, takeaways and restaurants on the seafront were exceptionally busy, especially on Sunday lunchtime.
“It was the busiest we’ve seen Morecambe for years,” said Chris Fearnley of Northern Relics antiques.
“We had a lot of people coming into the shop from the East coast and from Scotland.
“The council needs to do more events like this. Anything on the promenade brings people in.”
It was the Red Arrows’ first display in Morecambe since 2005. Last year’s planned performance was cancelled due to bad weather.
Jointly organised by Lancaster City Council and Morecambe Town Council, the Seaside Festival debuted in 2011 as a revival of the old popular Festival of Light and Water, which was scrapped by the city council in 2004.
