Developer in bid for new ‘superstore’

A NEW ‘superstore’ is being mooted for land next to Morecambe Football Club.

Manchester property consultants GL Hearn have written to Lancaster City Council making preliminary enquiries about “a new superstore with associated access, parking, servicing and landscaping”.

The location is listed as “land adjacent Globe Arena, Christie Way”.

However Rod Taylor, chief executive of Morecambe FC, said he was unaware of the project and does not believe the land in question belongs to the football club.

The Visitor asked GL Hearn which retail company they are acting for, but had not received an answer at time of going to press.

Clive Fishwick, chair of the West End Traders, said: “If it’s a supermarket, that would be a definite non-starter.

“There’s too many of them (in Morecambe) already and we don’t need another one.”

In March, Morecambe FC sold a vacant plot of land in front of the stadium to independent pub company Marston’s Inns and Taverns, who have since received planning permission to build a 180-cover pub/restaurant.
