Amusement arcade could close

Another long standing Morecambe institution is on the verge of closure.

The Oasis Amusement Arcade on the promenade is up for lease for £30,000.

The Visitor understands trade has been slow at Oasis for some time.

Estate agents Fisher Wrathall say the ground floor unit is “potentially suitable for a wide range of uses including retail, licenced trade and some form of leisure use”.

Oasis opened in the mid-1970s in the former Burton’s building on Marine Road Central.

Amusement arcades thrived in the town during the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s and many are still operating today.

Arcade trade association BACTA has warned the Government about the decline of the traditional amusement arcade.

BACTA blames a new gaming tax for adding extra unnecessary costs.

“The rates that the Minister has proposed for his new tax on arcades are simply too high and will result in another cruel wave of closures on the seaside,” said Derek Petrie, president of BACTA.

“300 arcades and 1,000 jobs have already gone, now, more will follow.”
