Help work on canal

You can help support a fundraising appeal to improve Lancaster canal bank and towpath after major renovations to the Lune Aqueduct.

The newly formed Canal and River Trust is inviting the local community to help raise £1,500 to restore the natural habitat surrounding the 200 year-old listed aqueduct on the edge of Lancaster.

They want to plant trees and restore hundreds of metres of mixed native hedges encouraging insects, birds and other wildlife back to the area.

Once established, the plants will provide food and shelter for canal wildlife for decades to come.

The work follows a recent £2.4m restoration of the aqueduct which restored the canal channel, removed graffiti, repaired masonry and improved public access.

“The aqueduct is rightly considered to be one of the top 10 heritage structures on the UK inland waterways,” said David Hennessey, Lune Aqueduct Project Officer.

“It’s vitally important we continue the great improvements we’ve made already and with the support of the local community we can ensure that future generations can appreciate this outstanding structure.

“The planting work will be undertaken with the help of local volunteer groups, schools and the public so we’d be really grateful if people donate and set us on our way to achieve this target.”

Donations can be made by texting LUNE to 70007 to donate £3.
