YOUR generous donations are helping a charity edge ever closer to its target of three tonnes of food.

Volunteers at Morecambe Foodbank are trying to collect enough food to set up their emergency food service at the former Central Methodist Church on Green Street.

The food will be given to the needy, who will be referred to the Foodbank by various agencies.

Volunteers have held collections at various local supermarkets.

Shoppers donated 327kgs of food at Morrisons recently, taking the total over the one tonne mark.

At another collection at Asda Lancaster, the Mayor of Lancaster Coun Sheila Denwood helped by handing out shopping lists and receiving donations.

Volunteers aim to have the Foodbank open by Christmas. They also need to raise £500 to build shelving in the empty room to provide storage space.

The church, now known as the GYM Methodist Church, will be open on Tuesday mornings to accept donations of food between 10am and noon and Sunday evenings between 5pm and 6pm.
