Festivals could be set for the axe

Two top Morecambe pop music festivals could be scrapped in 2013 as a funding row rumbles on.

Leading promoter Steve Middlesbrough looks set to cancel his May bank holiday ‘Morecambe Live’ and August bank holiday ‘Beach Bash’ events at the Platform due to lack of grants.

Mr Middlesbrough hopes to salvage four of his annual events: Country Kickback, Blueswater, Morecambe Jazz and Motown Magic. The popular DJ and promoter has been awarded under £15,000 by Morecambe Town Council for 2013, half what he received last year.

Councillor David Kerr, chair of Morecambe Town Council, said: “Mr Middlesbrough has been very fortunate to receive a lot of grants over the years.

“We can’t sustain this level of grants with the decisions we have to take in future.

“We have asked festival providers to go out and resource external funding.”

Talks continue between the town’s festivals and events committee and Mr Middlesbrough. A meeting will be held this Thursday night (January 24) at Morecambe Town Hall at 6.30pm.

But the public and press could be asked to leave the meeting when the cost of Mr Middlesbrough’s festivals are discussed, as this is classed as ‘commercially sensitive’.
