Families unhappy with West End car park plans
West End residents Angela and Paul Woodhead, Gill Taylor, Sam and Lucy Stoneham and Mike Barr are unhappy about plans to turn the children's play area on Parliament Street in to a car park.
Families are up in arms at plans to convert a play area in the West End into a temporary car park.
The former playground on Parliament Street will become a 19-space public parking spot for 12 months if proposals get the go-ahead on Monday (November 12).
But Gill Taylor, a resident of the West End, said: “I think it’s ridiculous.
“They will be pulling down two trees for something that’s just not needed.
“We’ve been canvassing residents and they just don’t want this car park.”
A Lancaster City Council report describes the new car park as “unnecessary” and calls the loss of trees “disappointing”.
“The availability of car parking (in the West End) does not appear to be problematic, albeit all the available parking is on-street,” says the report.
But council officers have still recommended that planning permission be granted.
“The proposal would provide a safer alternative (as it would be off-street; a facility the area currently does not benefit from) within easy walking distance of the local centre,” said the report.
“The car park will be regularly monitored to record the level of usage to provide evidence as to whether it is needed.”
