Youth games begin for school pupils

A GROUP of young people have jetted off to Germany to take part in an annual festival of sport and culture.

The 2012 International Youth Games started on Monday, July 23, in Rendsburg which runs until this, Saturday, July 28.

The games, which return to Lancaster in 2013, will see a group of more than 50 young people aged between 14 and 16 representing their clubs, schools, town and country at the games.

Representatives from most local high schools will be competing in a mix of sports and the arts including athletics, badminton, golf, swimming, table tennis, tennis, rowing, music and dance.

They will be competing against youngsters of a similar age from the city’s twin and friendship towns Almere in Holland, Rendsburg in Germany and Aalborg in Denmark.

Other cities taking part are Kritstianstad in Sweden, Rathenow in Germany, Vierzon in France and Raciborz in Poland.

Coun Ron Sands, cabinet member with responsibility for children and young people, said: “The International Youth Games have been taking place now for well over 20 years and are an excellent way for our young people to take pride in their area through their sporting achievements and show off their sporting prowess.

“They are all a credit to their schools and communities.”
