Couple celebrate diamond wedding anniversary
Gordon and Anna Greenwood, who are celebrating their diamond wedding.
A COUPLE who have survived the swings and roundabouts of marriage are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.
Gordon and Anna Greenwood, of Scale Hall, Lancaster, met in Keighley more than 60 years ago when Gordon pushed Anna on a swing.
Anna, 83, originally from Austria, was on a week’s holiday from the mill in Keighley, and had gone to the park with a few girls.
Gordon said: “I’d gone with my friend on a Sunday afternoon. I was playing gooseberry, tagging along. I saw her on the swing and gave her a push.”
However, the couple were separated when Gordon was called up for National Service, being based in Norfolk while serving with the Royal Air Force.
Anna said she promised to wait for him for two years and then decide what they were going to do.
She left her employers, Rouse Brothers, and went to another mill where she learned all about weaving and raw materials.
After Gordon’s national service, he started working at the mill at the same time as Anna, and ended up as production manager.
In 1952, the pair married at Keighley Register Office.
