THE bulk of planning applications for the controversial development on Lancaster's canal corridor site have now been submitted.
Lancaster City Council has received 14 applications from developer Centros Miller along with various supporting documents.
NewSubmissions include three outline planning applications for the building of new retail (including a De
benhams store), six listed building applications, and five conservation area consent applications.
Among the supporting documents is a retail assessment of Lancaster and other towns in the north west.
It suggests that the development "provides the opportunity for a genuine integrated extension to the city centre" and Lancaster needs it to "operate effectively as a sub-regional shopping destination".
It adds that if the development is refused: "A major, long standing opportunity to regenerate the only suitable city centre site for retail-led regeneration would be lost.
"Should this happen there is a prospect that Lancaster city centre would fail to perform its designated role as a sub-regional shopping centre and destination of choice for northern Lancashire and southern Cumbria."
The plans are available to view on the council's website (www.lan
caster.gov.uk) via the planning applications section or at Palatine Hall.
Comments can be made online, by email or letter and should be submitted by mid-June.
A date for the decision on these applications has not been made but provisionally may be considered by early/mid-September.
