A NEW £3million fitness club – employing more than 60 people – WILL open on Morecambe seafront in July, despite the parent company JJB Sports announcing 800 job losses nationwide and the closure of 72 of its retail stores throughout the UK.
Work at the Marine Drive development is said by the company to be progressing well and the outlet is on schedule to open in July.

Key features of the 15,000sq ft fitness club will include a 20-metre swimming pool with a 20ft movie screen and a 10,000sq ft air-conditioned gym.

There will also be two group exercise rooms, one being an Oriental 'Ki' mind and body studio for Yoga and Pilates.

JJB Fitness Club marketing manager, Ian Forrester said: "We are excited about opening in Morecambe. It will be a beautiful club with a simply stunning swimming pool."

A spokesperson for JJB Sports also confirmed their shops in Lancaster city centre and on the Sunnycliffe Retail Park in Morecambe would not be among the UK stores to close.

n Meanwhile, Morecambe's Ethel Austin clothes shop will also remain open for the time being, despite the announcement that the company is going into administration.

A total of 181 jobs are set to go at Ethel Austin's head office and distribution centre in Knowsley, with 33 of their UK stores set to close over the next three weeks.

But the Morecambe store on Euston Road and the Lancaster shop on Market Street are not on the list of closures.
